FAQs

GrantPuma uses deep learning algorithms to digest published information to determine your expertise.  We use this information to provide grant recommendations to you. All data used in our core engine exists in the public domain. The heart of our service is an AI-driven recommender with built-in decision-making processes that are informed by decades of experience with federal and state funding programs.

We get our funding opportunities from grants.gov and individual federal agency websites. Our data on your research activity and expertise come from public-domain data.  For more information, take a peek at our Security page.

Yes, to a certain extent. Our auto recommendations are based on your published works.  You can see the publications we use to make the recommendations, and you have the ability to include/exclude any publication from the algorithms.  If you remove all your papers, we obviously cannot provide any automatic recommendations.  However, we have a way for you to search for grants by inputting texts from anywhere (keywords, your old proposals, conference proceedings, a paper you read and like (even if it’s not yours), etc.).  This way, you can get customized searches based on areas of interest, rather than areas where you have published before.

Yes… Just kidding, and if anyone tells you they can guarantee you a funded proposal, run away. Even the best grant writers and editors we’ve worked with don’t have a 100% hit rate. There are so many factors that affect the outcome of your proposal.  Our job is to put the right opportunities in front of you.  But, what happens when you submit the grant is (unfortunately) out of our hands.

Well, first of all, all the data we use to make automated recommendations are in the public domain.  The search cards you create to find new grant recommendations are only used to provide the recommendations.  We do not use that text to train models or to provide similar recommendations to others.  Every interaction you have with the grant recommendations is used to improve future recommendations for you.  At GrantPuma, we put you first. Outside of public domain data, the privacy and security of your data are of paramount importance to us, and we take extensive measures to ensure that your data are safe.  You can read about how we use and protect you and your data in our Security Policy.

In our own search for research funding, we found that the free and low-cost options give too many irrelevant results, taking hours of our time to sift through…not worth it!  And our universities just couldn’t afford the curated or concierge services, which don’t even work that well.  Our philosophy is “less is more”, but we make sure the “less” is exactly what you need so you don’t waste time.  GrantPuma was built for researchers, by researchers, because it’s a service we wanted for years and could never find.

We believe science gets better when more people have a seat at the table. We will always be committed to helping faculty and researchers at ALL institutions, which is why we’ll always have a free version of GrantPuma.
